Lori’s books will be for sale at the event. \n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter \n\n\n\nLori Beattie is the owner and guide of Fit Frog Adventures where she has been organizing and leading year-round Calgary walks\, hikes\, and snowshoe days since 1997. She is also the author of Calgary’s Best Walks\, now in its 3rd edition\, and Calgary’s Best Bike Rides\, and features walking\, biking\, hiking\, and connecting cities on foot and by bike in monthly articles in the Calgary Herald\, her walk series on CBC Homestretch and many years as segment host on CTV Morning Live. She presents to groups on the pleasure of self-propelled urban exploration\, being a tourist in your own city\, building communities through walking\, and making Calgary feel like home\, one step\, or pedal\, at a time.

SUMMARY:Fish Creek Speaker Series - Gardening with Alberta Native Plants
DESCRIPTION:Gardening with Alberta Native Plants \n\n\n\nIn this talk Mathis will discuss the design\, installation\, and long-term management of native plant gardens in Calgary. Southern Alberta ecosystems are full of interesting plants that can be used to create beautiful gardens that support pollinators\, birds and other wildlife in your own yard. Topics that Mathis will cover will include: \n\n\n\n\nPlanning your garden layout and how to create different habitat zones (assessing light conditions\, soil preparation\, etc.)\n\n\n\nPlant Selection\n\n\n\nPlanting Design (nice plant combinations that look great)\n\n\n\nAttracting Wildlife (creating features for wildlife)\n\n\n\nSourcing and establishing plants (local nurseries\, plant rescues\, propagating your own plants!).\n\n\n\nLong-term Management (weeding needs\, watering approaches\, when to cut down old stalks\, etc.)\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter \n\n\n\nMathis Natvik is a restoration ecologist with just over 30 years of experience restoring grassland\, wetland\, and woodland ecosystems. His experience also includes innovative use of native plants in the urban environment including roadside wildflower meadows\, green roofs\, and rain gardens. Mathis has operated a private consulting firm (Natvik Design Inc) since 2000 and provided services to a variety of clients including municipalities\, provincial government\, NGOs\, and private landowners (see www.roofgarden.ca for examples of his work). He also teaches ecological restoration at the University of Calgary in the School of Architecture\, Planning\, and Landscape.
