“What if parks and nature were a grief companion?”: Exploring parks and nature connectedness in grief and loss
Informed by Healthy-Parks Healthy-People, Green-Social Prescribing and Compassionate Communities movements, parks/nature are found to play a role in quality of life at end-of-life, in palliative care, grief and memorializing. In this talk, Dr. Sonya Jakubec will share “the big ideas,” lessons learned through action research, as well as the practical realities, of connecting people and places that are forever changing in the seasons of life and cycles of nature. Discoveries over 10 years since the start of Good Grief Walking with the Friends of Fish Creek Provincial Park Society, and spin off and innovations across the province (including a growing Community of Practice supported by Healthy Aging Alberta) will be discussed by the Friends’ Good Grief Coordinator, Christina Tulluch. Here we ask, “What if parks and nature were a grief companion?” and uncover the necessary ingredients across health, parks and voluntary sectors for the highly relational and transformational work of nature connectedness and grief companionship.
