Speaker Series & Special Events

Speaker Series and Community Events Volunteers are critical in helping the Friends of Fish Creek achieve our mission of “engaging the public” by lending a hand at special events both in the park and throughout the community.

Volunteers take part in training to prepare them for the various opportunities that exist throughout the year, including both Speaker Series events at the Fish Creek Environmental Learning Centre and public events out in the community.

Once trained, volunteers sign up for which events suit their interests and schedules.

  • Speaker Series events typically take place on Thursday evenings (Sept to June, except Nov/Dec) and tasks include moving tables and chairs, setting up and audiovisual equipment, registering guests, setting up and putting away refreshments.
  • Community Events take place throughout the year, typically on weekends and evenings at a variety of locations throughout south Calgary.  Tasks involve representing the Friends, carrying and setting up display materials, speaking with the public and occasionally engaging youth through a Walk In The Watershed game (see photo).

We’re sorry, we will not be recruiting Speaker Series and Community Events volunteers in 2017.  Please check back with us next year.

Parks Day & Creekfest 2017: Celebrating Healthy Watersheds and Provincial Parks!

On July 17, 2016, the Friends of Fish Creek and Alberta Parks came together to offer our first ever collaborative event bringing Alberta Parks Day & the Friends of Fish Creek Creekfest celebration to Fish Creek Provincial Park.  Together we engaged over 2000 park visitors with various educational offerings about the Fish Creek watershed and Provincial Parks in Alberta.

We are excited to bring Parks Day & Creekfest to life again this year!  More event details will be announced later this year.

If you are interested in volunteering for this event in 2017, please check for details on this webpage in the spring.

Youth Nature Programs

Friends of Fish Creek Youth Nature Programs allow youth groups to discover and connect with the natural world.  These interactive educational programs typically take place in the west end of the park and foster in our youth a sense of wonder and appreciation for local wildlife as well as knowledge about how we can reduce our impact on our four-legged neighbours.

Volunteer responsibilities include greeting each group, helping to present the program with staff and/or fellow volunteers and ensuring group safety.  Police Information and Vulnerable Sector Checks are required for first year volunteers in this program (volunteer letter provided for discounted rate).

We will not be recruiting Youth Nature Program volunteers this year, please check back in 2018.
