Tour: Knowing our Grasslands

A walking tour through the Bow Valley Ranch grasslands in Fish Creek, discussing native plants, identification, and our grassland ecosystem.
Are you interested in learning more about the grassland ecosystem?
The Friends of Fish Creek Provincial Park Society will be running Grassland Walking Tours throughout the month of August. Come to learn about our grassland ecosystem, the plants that inhabit it, and how to start forming a relationship with the natural world.
This tour is open to all skill levels – beginners are welcome!
What to expect:
- A short, ~2km loop
- A beginners guide on identifying plants
- A discussion on the past, present, and future of our grasslands
What to bring:
- Come dressed for the weather
- Walking, preferably closed-toe shoes
- Sunscreen, bug spray, a water bottle
Location: All tours will begin and end at the Visitor Centre in Bow Valley Ranch (15979 Bow Bottom Trail SE). Parking is available on site.

Cost: Individual $10, Family $25 (up to 2 adults and children in same household)

About the tour guide:
Bones Whittaker (they/them), Candidate for Bachelors of Environmental Studies in Environment, Resources, and Sustainability
Bones is a third-year student in the University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Environment, and is currently acting as Environmental Program Coordinator for the Friends of Fish Creek Provincial Park Society. Born and raised in Alberta, they’ve become familiar with ecosystems across Alberta and Canada, especially fascinated by native and invasive plant species of the North.
