Fish Creek Fish Inventory
Thursday, August 28 & Friday, August 29

In partnership with Tsuut’ina Nation, Freshwater Conservation Canada (FCC), Fish Creek Watershed Association (FCWA), and other organizations, we’re conducting a fish inventory on the lower and upper Fish Creek watershed.
The fish inventory will gather data on the different species of fish that occur in our watershed, fill data gaps and tell us if native species like Bull Trout and Westslope Cutthroat Trout are still present in the watershed. The last time similar data was collected was in 1992. All data will be made public on Alberta.ca via the FWMIS database.
Project funding provided by the Alberta Conservation Association and Alberta Parks.
What’s a fish inventory?
The fish inventory involves sampling a total of 30 sites across the watershed, each 300m in length. Crews use backpack electro fishers to temporarily stun fish to easily net them to record their size and species before releasing them back into the creek. Teams collect fin clips for the purpose of genetic analysis of all captured trout in the genus Oncorhynchus, any Bull Trout Salvelinus confluentus, and suspected hybrids between Bull Trout and Brook Trout Salvelinus fontinalis.
Safety and timeframe:
You’ll see warning signs in the areas the fish inventory is happening, and we ask you and your pets to stay away from the water to avoid electric shock.
On inventory days, volunteer teams will walk the creek banks 25 metres up and downstream from the electrofishing location to make sure that no-one goes into the water. If a person or pet does enter the water, power will be cut immediately.
Location:
The map below shows electrofishing locations and dates. Note that each fish symbol on the map represents the starting point from which 300m upstream will be electro-fished.
