Great Canadian Giving Challenge – Managing Invasives, Protecting Biodiversity

Every donation made through CanadaHelps during the month of June will enter the Friends in a draw to win the grand prize of $20,000 and help in the fight against invasive plant species!

Over the years, invasive plant species have become part of the landscape and negatively impact the overall ecological health in the Fish Creek watershed. Invasive species proliferate because the natural controls that usually keep them in check do not exist when they take root in a new environment. They quickly out-compete our beautiful and often rare native plant species for limited resources – sunlight, soil and water – impacting the native plants themselves, but also the diverse wildlife that depend on them for food and shelter.

What can we do?
The Friends of Fish Creek have tackled small-scale invasive species management for years through our Weed Whackers program. Your donation to the Great Canadian Giving Challenge will provide funds necessary to continue this work, allowing us to purchase supplies/equipment and pay our hard-working staff to coordinate and engage volunteers in active stewardship. Our manual weed pulls focus on “winnable battles”, in areas where we know we can make a difference, such as the ATCO Heritage Grassland at the Bow Valley Ranch.

Our 2020 weed pull efforts will be mapped for the first time on our new digital app as we begin to build baseline data and better measure the impact of what we do.

Donate through and help us to win $20,000 that we can use in the fight against invasive plants in Fish Creek.

To be entered in the draw, donations must be made through CanadaHelps.

As a Great Canadian Giving Challenge prize winner, the Friends would focus our efforts on developing a plan to manage the park’s invasive species on a large scale, with the long-term goal of improving the overall ecological health in our beloved park.
